HVAC Open House
On Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, from 1 to 3 p.m. the Humane Society of the Black Hills would like to extend a thank you to the community for the help making the HVAC system upgrade a reality.
During that time we will have an informal open house for anyone who would like to visit the Humane Society for a tour, to ask questions, or just to spend some time visiting the animals. Members of the Board of Directors and Humane Society of the Black Hills director will be on hand for the duration of the event to answer any questions and show you around.
Stop in any time – there is no formal event, no ribbon cutting – just gracious board members and staff on hand to answer questions and show off the new HVAC system the community made a reality.

(9/7/2017) The old HVAC unit was removed from the east side of the Humane Society and the new unit was placed. The project should be complete in about 5 weeks.

$300,000 project will ease the heat at the Humane Society of the Black Hills
RAPID CITY, S.D. (June 20, 2017) ― The Humane Society of the Black Hills board of directors has unanimously approved a contract with Tessier’s, Inc. of Rapid City for a major heating and air conditioning HVAC project at the Humane Society, 1820 East St. Patrick Street.
The current HVAC system at the Humane Society is outdated and wasn’t built to manage temperatures and humidity levels in a busy kennel setting. As a result, temperatures on the animal floor climb into the 80s and humidity levels of 90 percent can be reached in the summer months.
“We’ve been discussing and raising money for this project for more than a year,” Jacque Harvey, Humane Society Director, said. “The Humane Society Board of Directors decided that for the safety of the animals and employees this project couldn’t wait any longer.”
Tessier’s, Inc. Mechanical Contractors in Rapid City won the bid for the project which will include removing existing roof top units and ductwork, removing and updating thermostats and associated wiring, updating gas lines and fire alarm controls, and updating all other systems necessary during the course of the project.
Mechanical equipment for the project will arrive in six to eight weeks and the project itself should take about 60 days. Anticipated completion date is early September.
About 90 percent of the project will take place on the west side and roof of the building so normal operations at the facility won’t be disrupted.
The Humane Society will be fund raising for the HVAC project at different events throughout the summer. Donations are welcome by mail, the Humane Society GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/helpusbeattheheat), or at the Humane Society office, 1820 E. St. Patrick Street.
Below are images of the current HVAC system. Most of the work on the new system will take place outside in this area. The interior duct work does not need to be replaced entirely.
