The Humane Society of the Black Hills took in more than 500 surrendered and 1,000 stray dogs in the past year. Most of the time, the animals are brought in through the front door during regular receiving hours or brought in after hours by the Rapid City Police Department. But occasionally, we’ll find a dog or cat left outside tied to a tree or left in a crate and with the freezing temperatures of winter nearing, that could be deadly for the animal.

Please, if you bring an animal to the Humane Society of the Black Hills after regular receiving hours, don’t leave it unattended but rather call the non-emergency number for the Rapid City Police Department, (605) 394-2192. An officer with access to the building will be dispatched to the Humane Society to place the animal in an inside kennel.
