The Humane Society of the Black Hills (HSBH) will celebrate the grand opening of its brand-new feline and small animal facility on Saturday, September 19th from 11:00AM to 1:00PM.
Located right next door to the existing shelter building at 1820 E. Saint Patrick St., the HSBH broke ground on the future location of “Kitty City” in April 2026, marking the first major new construction for the organization in decades. The Humane Society of the Black Hills, which helped more than 1,600 cats in 2025, has been fundraising all summer to supply Kitty City with brand new kennels, a top-notch security system, and nursery items. Thanks to an incredibly generous community of animal advocates, the $75k goal was surpassed just in time for grand opening.
The Rapid City-area community is invited to join the Humane Society for its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:00AM Saturday morning. Guests can enjoy tours of the facility, meet-and-greets with shelter staff and board members, special themed performances from the Black Hills Youth Orchestra, and more.
“Kitty City will be a game changer for our Humane Society. True blood, sweat, and tears have been shed by our team preparing the big move,” said Tammy Barrows, Executive Director of the Humane Society of the Black Hills. “Not only will our cats (and staff) have a brand-new space to thrive, this will give our organization room to grow its entire operation and move on to Phase II of 2026 construction.”
The long-awaited facility features a large free-roam play room, two exotic animal suites, its own adoption advisors, a kitten nursery equipped with an incubator, and much more. Regular business hours following the grand opening will mirror the Humane Society’s existing public hours: 11:00AM to 5:00PM Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and 11:00AM to 4:00PM Saturdays and Sundays.
