Doghouse For A Day: 30 Humans, 5 Kennels, 5 Memberships to Escape
HSBH invites the community to a playful, purpose-driven membership drive on Friday, October 3, 11 AM–5 PM
RAPID CITY, SD — The Humane Society of the Black Hills (HSBH) is hosting Doghouse For A Day on Friday, October 3, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the shelter. The challenge is simple and fun: 30 community participants will spend time in five decked-out kennels, calling and texting friends to secure at least five HSBH memberships each. Once a participant locks in those memberships, they’re “released.” If they don’t make it to five, they can donate toward HSBH’s lifesaving work to get out.
“Doghouse For A Day is a light-hearted way to rally support for serious needs,” said Christina Owen, Manager of Community Relations & Outreach at HSBH. “Memberships directly fuel medical care, sheltering, enrichment, and the day-to-day work that helps local pets get home.”
How It Works
- Who: 30 volunteer “in-kennel” participants.
- What: Each participant aims to secure 5 new or renewed HSBH memberships by calling/texting their networks.
- When: Friday, October 3 • 11 AM – 5 PM
- Where: Humane Society of the Black Hills, Rapid City, SD
- Why: Memberships and donations power veterinary care, behavior support, and adoption services for pets in our community.
Ways the Community Can Help
- Become a member: Join or renew—every membership counts toward a participant’s release.
- Donate: Can’t attend? Make a contribution in honor of your favorite participant.
- Sponsor a kennel or participant: Businesses and groups can amplify impact and visibility.
- Visit: Stop by during event hours to cheer on participants and learn about HSBH’s work.
To participate as an “in-kennel” fundraiser, sponsor a kennel, or arrange a media interview, contact community@hsbh.org or (605) 394-4170.
Event Safety & Operations: All participants are volunteers and may take breaks; no animals will share kennels with people; regular shelter operations continue as normal.
