Foster to Adopt

The Humane Society of the Black Hills is starting a new program to get more great dogs into more great homes – “Foster to Adopt” program for a select number of dogs.

Foster to Adopt gives the dog a chance to shine in the home and allows a potential adopter to experience the dog first-hand before doing a formal adoption.

Foster to Adopt is different from the traditional foster program. This program is designed to allow potential adopters to take a dog into their home to ensure that the animal fits in their family and lifestyle. The foster program solely focuses on placing a select few animals in potential adopter’s homes to determine if they match and, if they don’t, better understand the behaviors that need to be addressed to make the dog successful in another home.

What is Foster to Adopt?
Foster to Adopt is a program in which five people can “try a dog out” to see if they fit in a home. Another benefit is that foster to adopt gets a dog out of a shelter setting which will tell us more about how a dog does in a home to ensure they can go to the right home. The dog will also be seen more in public.

How is Foster to Adopt different from the Humane Society foster program?
This program is designed to allow potential adopters to take a dog into their home to ensure that the animal fits in their family and lifestyle.

The foster to adopt program places any dog over 6 months of age in potential adopter’s homes to determine if they match and, if they don’t, better understand the behaviors that need to be addressed to make the dog successful in another home.

Why is the Humane Society of the Black Hills doing a Foster to Adopt program?

How many dogs will be available through Foster to Adopt?

Who is eligible to participate in this program?
